Ben quickly became an expert at slimming down recipes, cutting out the ‘baddies’ from his diet, and examining the nutritional content of food packaging in microscopic detail. With this came a whole new dedication to ‘healthy eating’, especially fat-free food. He was swimming, running, and working out at a local gym every day – and more.

Then, over the summer of 2009, his sporting activities got even more intense. At the time Ben (who lives in the UK) was into a whole range of sports, not just running. In the second chapter of my book Please Eat… A Mother’s Struggle To Free Her Teenage Son From Anorexia I describe my pride at watching my 15-year son, Ben, win the 1500 metre race at the school sports day in July 2009. It helped to see the struggle from the perspective of a parent, especially as my own parents have learned to deal with my eating disorder.

I was able to read Mattock’s book, Please Eat… A Mother’s Struggle to Free Her Teenage Son from Anorexia. I first discovered her blog about three months ago, only to find out that it was a blog-turned-book. By describing their experiences, these brave families want to help others to identify the warning signs, get help and read about the tools and coping strategies they found most helpful on the journey to recovery.I’d like to introduce a guest blogger Bev Mattocks.

Nonetheless there are overlaps that many families will identify with. Of course with such a complex illness and widely differing personal circumstances, each story is different. Not only do these families want to help other parents understand this complex illness and demand prompt and effective treatment for their child, they also want to provide healthcare professionals with a unique insight into what goes on, at home, beyond the confines of the consulting room as families battle with the eating disorder 24/7. In this book 20 families from across the UK talk frankly to Bev Mattocks (author of Please Eat) about the effect that anorexia had on their lives. Getting a child through an eating disorder can be challenging.
